A Manifesto for Disabled Entrepreneurs | Ablepreneurs®
A year ago, I wrote the first version of this manifesto.
Ablepreneurs® has developed since then, but the reason it exists has not changed: disabled, chronically ill and neurodivergent people have valuable skills, experience and ideas, yet too many traditional professional spaces still make participation unnecessarily difficult.
Visibility matters.
But visibility without practical support, genuine connection and opportunities to develop is not enough.
That is why Ablepreneurs® is evolving into something people can actively be part of.
What is Ablepreneurs®?
Ablepreneurs® is an inclusive online community for disabled, chronically ill and neurodivergent professionals, entrepreneurs and creatives.
We are building a community where people can connect with others who understand, build useful professional and business skills, access practical learning, and take part at a pace that respects their health, energy, and circumstances.
Our focus is not recruitment or finding people jobs.
It is about community, education, connection and sustainable growth for people who don't fit that 9 - 5 hustle culture, 40-hour week box.
Why I founded Ablepreneurs®e
Hello, I’m Helen Pugh, founder of Helen Pugh – Business Solutions and Ablepreneurs®, based in Shropshire.
For more than three decades, I worked in customer-facing roles across estate agency, insurance, and financial services, developing extensive experience in organisation, communication, and problem-solving.
When chronic health conditions forced me out of the traditional workplace, my ability and ambition did not disappear.
What changed was my ability to work within the rigid expectations surrounding where, when and how professional work should happen.
I created FlexAssist, which later became Helen Pugh – Business Solutions, and began providing remote business support to small businesses and entrepreneurs.
I am also proud to have been recognised as a Theo Paphitis #SBS Official Winner.
Building my own business gave me a way to continue using my skills. It also showed me how many other capable people were being overlooked, underestimated or left trying to navigate professional life alone.
That experience became the foundation of Ablepreneurs®.
The barriers are bigger than physical access
Accessibility is often discussed in terms of ramps, lifts, screen readers and accessible toilets.
These things matter enormously, but exclusion does not end with physical access.
Disabled, chronically ill and neurodivergent people can also face:
Assumptions about their reliability, capability or ambition.
Rigid working patterns that leave no room for fluctuating health or energy.
Networking opportunities built around travel, noise, crowds or fixed attendance.
Professional expectations that confuse visibility with commitment.
A lack of relevant representation in business, leadership and education.
Hustle culture that treats rest, flexibility and boundaries as weakness.
Isolation from people who understand the realities of building a career or business alongside health challenges.
These barriers can make talented disabled, chronically ill and neurodivergent people question whether they have a place.
We believe there should be.
Why visibility alone isn’t enough
Ablepreneurs® began with a strong focus on visibility, advocacy and changing outdated assumptions.
That work still matters.
Accurate representation matters.
Disabled people deserve to be visible as business owners, professionals, leaders, experts and decision-makers, not reduced to inspirational stories or defined solely by a diagnosis.
But being seen is only part of the answer.
People also need places where they can belong, learn, exchange ideas, build confidence and create meaningful professional relationships without constantly having to explain or justify their needs.
That is the next chapter of Ablepreneurs®.
What we’re building now
We are developing Ablepreneurs® as a private online community that offers a mix of free and paid ways to participate.
Our plans include:
A supportive community of disabled, chronically ill and neurodivergent professionals, entrepreneurs and creatives.
Practical courses and masterclasses.
Online networking without the pressure and accessibility barriers of traditional events.
Virtual co-working for connection, accountability and reduced isolation.
Opportunities to share experience, knowledge and useful resources.
Access to trusted partners who understand and respect the needs of our community.
People can participate in ways that suit their capacity, energy and needs.
There will be no expectation to be constantly visible, always available or endlessly productive to prove that they belong.
This is not about lowering ambition.
It is about creating a more sustainable, accessible way for ambition, talent, and experience to grow.
The values guiding Ablepreneurs®
Authenticity
We will not gloss over the realities of disability, chronic illness or neurodivergence.
Nor will we treat people as diagnoses.
Members are whole people with knowledge, experience, ambitions and lives beyond their health.
Accurate representation
We will represent different experiences honestly and respectfully.
No flattening complex stories into inspirational soundbites and no performative inclusion.
Community over isolation
Nobody should have to build a business or professional future entirely alone.
Ablepreneurs® is being designed to create meaningful connections, not simply another online group filled with noise.
Sustainable ambition
Rest, flexibility and boundaries are not evidence of a lack of commitment.
Sustainable progress matters more than keeping pace with working practices that were never designed for everyone.
Practical value
Community should provide more than encouraging words.
We want our members to leave conversations, masterclasses and events with useful knowledge, stronger connections and something they can apply.
Warm professionalism
Kindness and credibility are not opposites.
Ablepreneurs® is welcoming, honest and human while maintaining high professional standards.
Who is Ablepreneurs® for?
Ablepreneurs® is for disabled, chronically ill and neurodivergent adults who want to:
Build or grow a business.
Develop professional or business skills.
Meet people with shared experiences.
Access learning in a more flexible environment.
Work alongside others without traditional networking pressure.
Feel part of a professional community where their needs are understood.
You don't need to be at a particular stage, have everything figured out, or be able to participate every day.
You just need to believe your skills, ideas, and ambitions still matter.
What change does Ablepreneurs® want to create?
We want to help create a future where disabled, chronically ill and neurodivergent people do not have to choose between protecting their health and pursuing meaningful professional growth.
A future where flexibility is not treated as a favour.
Where rest does not have to be earned through exhaustion.
Where professionalism is not defined by someone’s ability to work fixed hours, travel to inaccessible spaces or perform productivity for other people.
And where community, skills and opportunity are genuinely accessible.
That change will not happen through visibility alone.
It will happen by building practical alternatives and inviting people to help shape them.
This is the next chapter
Ablepreneurs® exists because talent does not disappear when traditional work stops working.
We are building a community where disabled, chronically ill and neurodivergent people can be understood, supported and taken seriously - while developing skills, connections and opportunities on terms that work for their lives.
This began as a call for visibility.
It is becoming a place to belong.
